Ephesians 1:17–21 – Our Daily Prayer

Ephesians 1:17-21 Amplified Bible (AMP)

17 [I always pray] that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may grant you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation [that gives you a deep and personal and intimate insight] into the true knowledge of Him [for we know the Father through the Son]. 18 And [I pray] that the eyes of your heart [the very center and core of your being] may be enlightened [flooded with light by the Holy Spirit], so that you will know and cherish the [a]hope [the divine guarantee, the confident expectation] to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the[b]saints (God’s people), 19 and [so that you will begin to know] what the immeasurable and unlimited and surpassing greatness of His [active, spiritual] power is in us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of His mighty strength 20 which He [c]produced in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His own right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion [whether angelic or human], and [far above] every name that is named [above every title that can be conferred], not only in this age and world but also in the one to come.

  • Proverbs 4:7 says “Getting wisdom is the most important thing that you can do!” (The Living Bible)
  • The knowledge of Jesus is defined in the text as wisdom! “… [that gives you a deep and personal and intimate insight] into the true knowledge of Him [for we know the Father through the Son].…”
  • Do we truly know and believe the grace and power that is in our life the unmerited favor because of Jesus act on the cross?
  • Do we know how much we are loved?
  • Jesus knew He was the beloved son of God! Do we know that we are the beloved sons and daughters of God?
  • Focus on Jesus and see Jesus, know He is with you and loves you deeply, trust in His active power in your life!
  • This is key for us to achieve victory through Christ!

Hebrews 4:12

12 For the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active, operative, energizing, and effective]; it is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating to the dividing line of the [a]breath of life (soul) and [the immortal] spirit, and of joints and marrow [of the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart.

Being Led By the Spirit – What’s the Starting Point?

It is easy to pray and to have discussion on wanting to be led by the Holy Spirit.  What are we talking about when we discuss this concept?  Recently, this word out of Second Peter was shared with me.

2 Peter 1:3-11

The Message (MSG)

Don’t Put It Off

3-4Everything that goes into a life of pleasing God has been miraculously given to us by getting to know, personally and intimately, the One who invited us to God. The best invitation we ever received! We were also given absolutely terrific promises to pass on to you—your tickets to participation in the life of God after you turned your back on a world corrupted by lust.

5-9So don’t lose a minute in building on what you’ve been given, complementing your basic faith with good character, spiritual understanding, alert discipline, passionate patience, reverent wonder, warm friendliness, and generous love, each dimension fitting into and developing the others. With these qualities active and growing in your lives, no grass will grow under your feet, no day will pass without its reward as you mature in your experience of our Master Jesus. Without these qualities you can’t see what’s right before you, oblivious that your old sinful life has been wiped off the books.

10-11So, friends, confirm God’s invitation to you, his choice of you. Don’t put it off; do it now. Do this, and you’ll have your life on a firm footing, the streets paved and the way wide open into the eternal kingdom of our Master and Savior, Jesus Christ.

What is the important point here?

  • Everything that we need to lead a God pleasing life has been given to us!

What then are we to do with what has been given?  Build on it!  What are we to add or build within our being?

  • Good Character
  • Spiritual Understanding
  • Alert Discipline
  • Passionate Patience
  • Reverent Wonder
  • Warm Friendliness
  • Generous Love

The Holy Spirit is the one that will lead us into this growth or building.  What Peter is speaking of is the outgrowth of being led and directed by the Holy Spirit.

Galatians 5:22-23

New King James Version (NKJV)

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

Do we actively ask the Holy Spirit to lead us into these qualities?  Isn’t the key for us to focus on each of these qualities on a day-by-day, hour-by-hour, minute-by-minute basis?  If we pray to receive more of these qualities and grow in these qualities through the Holy Spirit and also work to foster an environment where the Holy Spirit can move in us, this will come to pass.  This is the beginning of our transformation.  As we do this, the Spirit will then prompt in us the vision and the direction that God has for our lives.  This will propel us more and more into the direction that God intends for us to take.
