Joseph Prince Easter Service – See Jesus in the Passover and Be Delivered (Exodus 12:1-14)

Exodus 12:1-14  New American Standard Bible   (NASB)

The Passover Lamb

12 Now the Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of [a]Egypt, “This month shall be the beginning of months for you; it is to be the first month of the year to you. Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying, ‘On the tenth of this month they are each one to take a [b]lamb for themselves, according to their fathers’ households, a [c]lamb for[d]each household. Now if the household is too small for a [e]lamb, then he and his neighbor nearest to his house are to take one according to the [f]number of persons in them; according to [g]what each man should eat, you are to [h]divide the lamb. Your [i]lamb shall be an unblemished male a year old; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats.[j]You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month, then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel is to kill it [k]at twilight. Moreover, they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel [l]of the houses in which they eat it. They shall eat the flesh that same night, roasted with fire, and they shall eat it with unleavened bread [m]and bitter herbs. Do not eat any of it raw or boiled at all with water, but rather roasted with fire, both its head and its legs along with its entrails. 10 And you shall not leave any of it over until morning, but whatever is left of it until morning, you shall burn with fire. 11 Now you shall eat it in this manner: with your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste—it is the Lord’s Passover. 12 For I will go through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments—I am the Lord. 13 The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you [n]live; and when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you [o]to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

Feast of Unleavened Bread

14 ‘Now this day will be a memorial to you, and you shall celebrate it as a feast to the Lord; throughout your generations you are to celebrate it as[p]a permanent ordinance.

  • Beginning of Months (Exodus 12 vs 1)
    • Passover season is a new beginning
    • Passover is the first month of the new year
    • Jewish people have spiritual and civil calendar
    • Civil calendar begins in September.
    • When you put your trust in Jesus it is a new beginning
  • 10th of the month to take a lamb – 1 lamb per house
    • When God sent His son He meant for your entire family to be saved
    • Because of your belief there is an open door for all heaven to flow into your family, despite what they think of your faith. Don’t be discouraged or disheartened. Because of you, your parents will see Jesus.
  • Thief on cross only said, Lord Jesus “remember me” and he was saved. It doesn’t take a lot to be saved. Only believe and you will be saved. This does not mean it wasn’t costly for us to be saved.
  • If lamb is too big for house share between houses
    • The lamb is too large for the house
    • Jesus is too big
    • Jesus has more resources than you have problems
    • Jesus has answers before you have questions
    • When He fed 5000 He made too much food, there were 12 baskets full left over
    • Like the catch of fish that Peter experienced, it is a wonderful day when you call for help because the blessings of God are too big
    • If God blesses someone else it doesn’t mean you get less. God has enough to bless everyone.
    • Your heart doesn’t need to be stingy, be a giver, be a blessing. This will enlarge your heart to be able to receive more from God
  • Exodus 12 Vs 5 – Lamb without blemish
    • It has to be perfect since it is a symbol of Gods son. He was perfect, therefore the lamb must be perfect
    • Male of 1st year is cute and adorable – why doesn’t God choose a mature lamb?
      • God made lamb stay with them. Taken on 10th and killed on 14th
      • The lamb bonded with the children
      • On 5th day, father has to kill it
      • Why?
        • God gave us His adorable son to dwell with us
        • We beheld His glory
        • Jesus was examined 5 days in the temple before He was crucified and no fault was found in Him
  • Exodus 12 Vs 7 – Blood on door posts
    • Blood on door posts and lentil – sign of the cross
    • It is not inside but outside the house
      • God sees it not family
      • It is for God to see
      • We need to have faith and believe in the blood
      • Vs 13 – God pass over when he sees blood
        • Not when He sees good family name
        • Not when He sees works
        • Jews had covenant with God but still needed the blood
        • Not about you or what you do, it is about Jesus
  • Eat meat roasted in fire (Exodus 12 vs 8-9)
    • Why?
      • Mixed multitude that joined the Jews that night
      • Egyptians joined the Jews that night some were saved
      • When Jesus hung on cross He carried everything (all our sin, transgressions, etc)
        • Jesus bore wrong doings,
        • God’s fiery indignation fell on Jesus at the cross
          • If we feel guilty it is wrong since Jesus already was punished for what we did wrong. It fell on Him for every single sin.
          • For us to take our sin on ourselves is for us to try to become our own Savior. This is pride.
  • Psalm 105:37 – “He brought them out with silver and Gold and there was none feeble.”
    • If the Israelites can have that, how much more can we have who have the true lamb of God, the Lord Jesus – none sick amongst us
    • We should have super health and super prosperity.
    • Is there a promise of prosperity?
      • Yes, He brought them out with silver and gold!
    • There were those in 80s and 90s, but none feeble. God renewed their youth like the eagles.
  • Exodus 12:10-11 – eat belt on waist, sandals on feet and staff in hand
    • What does this mean?
      • How we are to take the Lords supper
        • God is saying to Israelite’s “Get ready to get out of Egypt (physical deliverance)”
        • Every time you take Lord’s Supper are you expecting your physical deliverance?
  • Exodus 12 (vs 14) – Jesus walked into temple 5 days before He was crucified
    • He was examined and found without blemish
    • Jesus took Passover on an earlier night (this was allowed)
    • He was arrested after this and taken to temple on Passover morning
    • Jesus died on Passover
    • As Passover lamb was brought to temple up a ramp to altar by Priest, Jesus carried the cross up to Golgotha
      • Jesus fell as He fell so that we could raise higher
    • Priest tied the lamb to the post at 9 AM at same time Jesus was nailed to the cross
      • At this time there was a loud blast of the Rams horn
      • All in Jerusalem knew lamb was bound
    • At noon darkness fell over the earth (noon-3 pm). This darkness is recorded by Chinese historians
    • At 3 PM Priest carried knife up to the lamb and killed it
    • At 3 PM end of darkness Jesus cried “it is finished”
      • At same time the Priest cried “it is finished”
      • Rams horn was sounded
      • When rams horn was sounded all Jerusalem knew that the lamb had died
      • The Rams horn is the preaching of Jesus, proclaiming you have been redeemed by Jesus
      • Jubilee starts the moment the Rams horn is sounded – debt is cancelled
      • All sin is cancelled by Jesus death – you have truly been redeemed
      • You have no right to feel guilty, judge yourself or others
      • Stop complaining and look at all the blessings, receive the gift of no condemnation for yourself and others
      • Be more merciful
      • We judge others by their actions but we judge ourselves by our intentions
